My son today had a rough day. He lives with autism and was having difficulty using a youtube video to help him with his minecraft building. He became inconsolable and was saying negative things about himself. My Wife tried hard to help but he didn’t want her around. That upset her to see her kid in meltdown and then to be told to go away. What are some ways you use to help keep yourself regulated while your child is having a rough time?

It’s hard not to get emotional when my own son gets like that I try to remember to stop for a moment and think about what I want to do next. I try to recognize signs of getting upset like, Is my heart starting to beat fast, or is it hard catching my breath. Just stopping to ask myself a question like that makes it easier for me to stay calm.
