Support Groups: What to Expect and Why they Matter

Finding Strength in Community: Why OFSN Support Groups Matter

Parenting a child with emotional, behavioral, or mental health challenges can feel isolating—but you don’t have to face it alone. At Oregon Family Support Network (OFSN), our support groups offer a safe, welcoming space where families can connect, share, and grow stronger together.

What to Expect

OFSN support groups are free, peer-led gatherings where parents and caregivers come together to talk openly and without judgment. Whether it’s your first time or you’ve been attending for years, you’ll be met with empathy, understanding, and people who truly get it.

Support groups may vary by region, but many include:

  • A welcoming check-in

  • A guided topic or open discussion

  • Practical tips and shared resources

  • Time to connect with others facing similar experiences

  • Flexible formats—some are in-person, most are virtual

We know it takes courage to reach out. But you won’t be put on the spot, and you’ll never be pressured to share more than you’re comfortable with.

Why They Matter

Support groups help break isolation and build resilience. They’re about more than venting—they’re a lifeline.

“Before I found OFSN, I felt like no one understood what I was going through. In group, I finally felt seen. It gave me hope.” – OFSN Parent

When families support one another, they gain more than emotional relief. They gain tools, strategies, and a sense of belonging.

“I used to think I was the only one struggling. But hearing other parents share their stories helped me realize I wasn’t failing—I was doing the best I could. And now I have people who’ve got my back.”

Peer Support Makes the Difference

Our groups are led by trained Family Support Specialists who are also parents of children with complex needs. They’ve walked the walk—and they’re here to help others navigate the journey.

“There’s something powerful about talking to someone who’s been where you are. It’s not just sympathy—it’s real understanding.”

Because these groups are peer-led, they’re rooted in trust, shared experience, and mutual respect. It’s support that empowers, not lectures.

You Deserve Support

Whether you’re navigating a new diagnosis, dealing with school issues, or simply feeling overwhelmed, you don’t have to go it alone.

We invite you to join us. Come once, come often—whatever works for you. There’s always a seat for you in our circle.
