Taking a Break to Breathe: How OFSN’s Respite Opportunities Support Families

Finding Strength in Community: Why OFSN Support Groups Matter

Parenting is always a full-time job—but when you are raising a child with behavioral health, emotional, or mental health needs, the responsibilities can be intense and constant. Between navigating school meetings, therapy appointments, and everyday challenges, many parents and caregivers rarely get the chance to pause and recharge. That’s where Oregon Family Support Network’s (OFSN) respite opportunities come in.

What is Respite?

Respite is short-term, temporary relief for primary caregivers. It’s more than just “time off”—it’s a lifeline. During respite time, children are cared for in a safe, supportive environment, giving parents and caregivers a chance to take a break, focus on self-care, run errands, or simply rest.

At OFSN, we believe that caring for caregivers is just as important as caring for children. Respite opportunities are designed to provide a set couple of hours where you can, grab coffee or a meal with a friend, pay bills, or just take a break while we provide special activities where kids can learn and have fun.

Why Respite Matters

Respite is not a luxury—it’s an essential part of maintaining a healthy family. Research shows that regular breaks can:

  • Reduce caregiver stress and burnout

  • Improve family relationships

  • Support better mental and physical health for both parents and children

  • Increase the ability to cope with ongoing challenges

For families already stretched thin, even a short break can make the difference between feeling overwhelmed and feeling capable.

How OFSN Makes Respite Accessible

We know that finding trusted care can be one of the biggest barriers for parents. OFSN Family Support Specialists have not only walked a similar path, they are trained to understand the needs of children with behavioral health challenges. Our respite opportunities are:

  • Consistent – We provide regularly scheduled Parents Afternoon/Night Out events so that you can keep consistency for yourself and your kids.

  • Safe and supportive – Staff and volunteers receive training in trauma-informed care and inclusive practices.

  • Fun for kids – Activities are designed to be engaging, skill-building, and inclusive so that children look forward to their time.

The Impact in Families’ Words

One parent shared,

“Before OFSN respite, I couldn’t remember the last time I had a quiet moment to myself. Even two hours made me feel like I could breathe again. I came back to my child more patient, more loving, and ready for whatever came next.”

A Break is Good for Everyone

When caregivers have the chance to rest and recharge, children benefit too. Respite helps create a more balanced home environment where both parents and kids can thrive.

At Oregon Family Support Network, we see respite as a powerful tool for sustaining family well-being, strengthening resilience, and preventing crisis. By making these opportunities available, we’re not just giving parents a break—we’re building healthier futures for entire families.
