COVID feels different when your child has a history of being discriminated against in medical settings. Disability Rights Oregon is working hard and fast to put a safety net around the developmentally disabled, but we aren’t all the way there yet. They are working now on getting rid of the Quality of Life Measurements that discriminate and project ableist views onto vulnerable populations.
From DRO, “We hope that the state will incorporate the perspectives of people with
disabilities that disproportionately are impacted by the state’s prioritized list of services by barring the use of the discriminatory quality-adjusted life year (QALY) as a consideration”.
To my fellow families out there living with this added stressor, you are not alone. We will keep shining a light on ableist policies and practices! Here is a link with information about the reasonable hospital accommodations that have been put in place, just incase. I hope none of us will need it. Stay safe and stay well!

Thank you so much for sharing this information about “quality of life” measurements. I can understand using it as a tool to help patients themselves make tough decisions on medical treatments. But applying it to the lives of people with disabilities?
