I’m wondering if there are any decent long-term positions for smart contract developers. When I researched the smart contract developer job market, I noticed there weren’t many openings. The few positions I found often looked suspicious, and I honestly doubt some of them even exist. Meanwhile, most of the openings seem to be for front-end or back-end development.

I also checked out several reputable smart contract auditing companies, but they don’t seem to be publicly hiring either. I’ve seen people say you can get a job by participating in vulnerability research programs, CTF competitions, or hackathons, and that companies will eventually contact you. Personally, I’m quite skeptical of this idea.

In my case, I didn’t get my auditor job through CTF competitions, vulnerability discovery programs, or public contests. Frankly, I didn’t participate in any of those. I got the job simply because CEX posted an auditor vacancy and I applied. There was no “public bragging and waiting for companies to contact me.”

Therefore, I now believe that vacancies only appear when companies actually need an employee. And when that happens, they usually post the vacancy on their website or on platforms like LinkedIn, where you can apply directly. If the vacancy can’t be found anywhere on official channels, I’m inclined to believe it probably doesn’t exist.

The smart contract market is truly niche. It’s not the frontend or backend, where there are thousands of vacancies. Demand here is highly localized and highly dependent on market cycles. During a bull market, new protocols emerge and vacancies increase. During a bear market, almost everything comes to a standstill.

Therefore, the feeling of “nothing” is normal, especially if it’s not the peak of the hype.

Do you mean that “smart contracts as a niche” is mainly about development for new protocols, or do you also include auditing, security, and formal verification of contracts?

A significant portion of the actual work in this field is not traditional long-term positions, but project-based work. This is evident on platforms like Zinn Hub where the smart contract development market is largely built around freelance and project-based work rather than traditional full-time hiring. Job openings simply don’t always look like the traditional ones. Many developers first join a project as temporary contributors and only later become part of the core team, a process rarely publicly advertised.
