Grinding Gear Games has set the stage for Path of Exile 2 to be one of the most ambitious action RPGs of the decade. Every new reveal teases systems that refine and expand on what made the first game such a giant in the genre. One of the most recent showcases highlighted a pivotal section in the campaign: the grim Ogham Village and its brutal boss, the Executioner. This encounter encapsulates Path of Exile 2’s new tone deadly, methodical, and deeply atmospheric.
Ogham Village represents much of what the sequel is trying to convey. Where the first Path of Exile often leaned into dark fantasy with sprawling, corrupted environments, the sequel takes things further with more grounded, oppressive settings. Ogham Village is not a mythical ruin or demonic battlefield it’s a place where humans lived, thrived, and were ultimately destroyed. As you move through its charred remains and eerie silence, the sense of desolation sets the stage for what’s to come.
The art direction drives this atmosphere home. Dilapidated huts, burnt wood, and broken totems line the narrow village paths. Enemy patrols stalk the area, turning every approach into a test of positioning and timing. There is no safety here just the looming promise of the Executioner’s arrival.
In many ARPGs, bosses serve as spectacle. They appear with flashing attacks, telegraphed mechanics, and an obvious loot pinata payoff. Path of Exile 2 is taking a different approach, grounding its bosses in the world and narrative. The Executioner isn’t just another monster. He’s a character defined by cruelty, a human weapon forged in brutality, and his presence is meant to feel oppressive even before the fight begins.
Players learn about him through environmental storytelling. Corpses strung up in cages, the aftermath of slaughter, and whispered dialogue from surviving NPCs paint the picture of a man who rules through fear. By the time he steps onto the battlefield, you already know what he is capable of.
