    What people call “the abortion pill” is actually two medications: mifepristone and misoprostol.

    Mifepristone (aka mife) stops a pregnancy from growing by blocking a hormone called progesterone, and misoprostol (aka miso) empties a pregnancy from the uterus.

    People can either take a combination of mife and miso, or miso on its own, to safely and effectively end a pregnancy.

    Abortion pills are most effective through 12 weeks after the first day of the last menstrual period, but they continue to be effective beyond that.
