It still throws you into Wraeclast, still asks you to survive a long campaign before maps open up, but the feel is different from minute one. Even small goals, like planning a build around Fate of the Vaal HC Exalted Orb, make more sense now because the systems around your character are cleaner and easier to read. That doesn’t mean the game’s gone soft. Far from it. It’s still dense, still a bit brutal, and still the kind of ARPG that wants you to learn by getting smacked around a few times.
A better way to build skills
The gem setup is probably the biggest improvement for regular players. In the first game, loads of build decisions were tied to gear sockets, colours, and links, and that could be a nightmare. You’d get a great item, then realise it didn’t fit your skill setup at all. PoE2 cuts through that mess. Active gems and support gems are handled in a much more direct way, so experimenting feels natural instead of annoying. You’re not wrestling your armour every time you want to try something new. You just test ideas, swap things around, and keep moving. That one change alone makes the whole game feel less stubborn and more inviting.Freedom on the passive tree
The passive tree is still massive, and yeah, it can still make your eyes glaze over at first. But the dual specialization system gives it a new kind of flexibility. That’s what stood out to me. You can set up two approaches on one character and switch depending on what you’re doing. Maybe one setup is built for close-range pressure, while the other leans into spells or safer ranged damage. It opens up a lot of room to play without feeling like every choice is permanent. Add in the class variety and ascendancies, and there’s loads of space for weird ideas, safer builds, glass-cannon nonsense, minion armies, whatever you’re into.Combat asks more from you
Moment to moment, the fights feel sharper. The dodge roll changes everything. It sounds simple on paper, but in practice it makes combat more active and less static. You can’t just stand there, spam skills, and hope your stats carry you. Bosses demand more attention, and even regular packs can punish lazy movement. You start watching animations, reading the field, and reacting instead of face-tanking. That gives the combat a bit more tension. It also makes victories feel earned, especially when a fight clicks and you realise you’ve actually learned the rhythm instead of brute-forcing it.Why the grind still works
What really keeps it all together is that PoE2 still understands why people love this genre in the first place. The loot chase is there. The seasonal resets are there. Standard, Hardcore, Solo Self-Found, trading, stash management, all of it still matters. You’ll still spend time tweaking gear, watching the market, and chasing one upgrade that pulls the whole build together. For players who like trading or picking up currency and items efficiently, U4GM is the sort of name that comes up because that side of the game never stops being important.
