Juneteenth: Celebrating Freedom, Strength, and Community

06/19/2026

On June 19, communities across the United States observe Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and celebrates Black freedom, resilience, culture, and achievement.

Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed enslaved African Americans that they were free. Although the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued more than two years earlier, many enslaved people had remained unaware of their freedom. For generations, Juneteenth has been observed as a day of remembrance, celebration, education, and community gathering.

In 2021, Juneteenth became a federal holiday, but its significance extends far beyond a date on the calendar. It is a reminder of both the progress our nation has made and the responsibility we share to build communities where every person has the opportunity to thrive.

Why Juneteenth Matters to Families

History shapes the experiences of families and communities today. Understanding that history helps us better understand one another, appreciate different perspectives, and strengthen the connections that help communities flourish.

For children and youth, learning about Juneteenth can foster empathy, curiosity, and an appreciation for the diverse stories that make up our nation’s history. It provides an opportunity to talk about courage, perseverance, fairness, and the importance of treating others with dignity and respect.

These conversations do not need to be complicated. They can begin with simple questions:

  • What does freedom mean?
  • How can we help others feel welcome and valued?
  • What can we learn from people whose experiences are different from our own?
  • How do communities become stronger when everyone has the opportunity to contribute?

Honoring the Strength of Families and Communities

At Oregon Family Support Network, we know that families come from many different backgrounds, cultures, and lived experiences. Every family has a story. Every family deserves to be heard.

Our work is grounded in the belief that connection, support, and understanding help families navigate challenges and build resilience. We see every day how communities are strengthened when people come together, listen to one another, and recognize the value each person brings.

Juneteenth is an opportunity to celebrate that spirit of community. Across the country, families gather for festivals, educational events, music, storytelling, meals, and acts of service that honor the rich contributions of Black Americans throughout our nation’s history.

Learning, Reflecting, and Moving Forward

Juneteenth invites all of us to learn more about our shared history and to reflect on how we can contribute to stronger, more connected communities.

Whether that means attending a local event, reading a book, supporting a Black-owned business, visiting a museum, or simply having a conversation with family members about the meaning of freedom, each step helps deepen understanding and strengthen community bonds.

As we commemorate Juneteenth, we honor the resilience of those who came before us, celebrate the contributions of Black communities across our nation, and reaffirm our commitment to building a future where every child, youth, and family has the opportunity to thrive.

Freedom, belonging, and community are values worth celebrating—not only on Juneteenth, but every day of the year.
