Minority Mental Health Awareness Month: Building Understanding, One Conversation at a Time

07/13/2026

Every July, Minority Mental Health Awareness Month reminds us that mental health is an important part of our overall well-being and that everyone deserves access to support that is welcoming, respectful and responsive to their unique experiences.

While mental health challenges can affect anyone, many individuals and families from historically underserved communities continue to face barriers when seeking help. Cultural stigma, language difference, financial challenges, and limited access to culturally responsive care can make it difficult to reach out, even when support is most needed.

Every Family’s Journey is Different

No two mental health journeys look the same. Culture, family traditions, community values, and personal experiences all shape how we understand emotional well-being and how we seek support.

Some people may talk openly about stress, anxiety or depression. Others may express emotional struggles through physical symptoms, changes in behavior, or by withdrawing from family and friends. Some families may be unsure where to begin or worry about being judged if they ask for help.

There is no “right” way to begin the conversation. What matters is knowing that reaching out is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Supporting Families Through Connection

When families feel heard, respected, and understood, they are more likely to find the support that works for them. That means creating spaces where every person feels welcomed, where different perspectives are valued, and where lived experience is recognized as an important source of knowledge.

At Oregon Family Support Network, we believe that families are the experts on their own lives. Our role is to walk alongside parents and caregivers, offering understanding, practical resources, and hope without judgment.

How You Can Help

Everyone has a role in creating communities where mental health is supported and stigma is reduced.

You can make a difference by:

  • Listening without judgment.
  • Learning about different cultural perspectives on mental health.
  • Encouraging loved ones to seek support when they need it.
  • Sharing trusted resources within your community.
  • Speaking openly about mental health to help normalize these conversations.
  • Showing compassion, even when you don’t fully understand someone else’s experience.

Small acts of understanding can have a lasting impact.

You Are Not Alone

If you or someone you care about is feeling overwhelmed, support is available. Reaching out for help is one of the strongest things you can do.

Whether you’re navigating parenting challenges, supporting a loved one, or simply need someone who understands, you don’t have to face it alone. Compassionate support, meaningful connection, and hope are available at 1-833-732-2467.

This Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, let’s continue building communities where every voice is heard, every story matters, and every family knows they belong.
